The first National Teacher of the Year honor was given in 1952 and the CCSSO website states that it “continues as the oldest, most prestigious national honors program that focuses public attention on excellence in teaching.” The funny thing about the award is that winners are released from their classroom duties the following year to travel as a spokesperson for the teaching profession.

I was comforted to discover that these teachers too find that it is important to:
- KNOW your students!
- COLLABORATE with others!
- LEARN, learn, and learn some more!
