We are back from our first vacation of the summer! We went to Peru with Adventures by Disney. The 24 hours I spent on planes helped me to read more than I had anticipated!
These are the books I completed:
I finished Tim Federle’s Five, Six, Seven, Nate! While not as good as the first book in this series (Better Nate Than Ever) it is a MUST read just to find out what happens to Nate. If you LOVE Broadway musicals or know someone who does these are the books for them. Note: Nate is a 13 year old gay character who deals with both bullying and relationships.
The first line of this book is also the title…gripping. It is a sad, sad story about bullying and all the harm it can do to the victim. Yaqui and her victim are Latina high school girls. There are bits of Spanish sprinkled throughout the book that are not always translated which was fun for me to try to determine the meaning. This obviously is a YA text. It is a quick read and an important text that will stay with you long after you have finished it.
The Book Whisperer was the first teaching textbook I have listened to in an audio version. I felt like there were times I wanted to slow down the reading or write in the margins of the text where I could not. I will likely buy a used copy of this text and listen to it again. If you just want to get the jist of an author’s message though, the audio version a great way to accomplish this. I learned Donalyn Miller is a 6th grade teacher who believes strongly that: a) teachers should be readers; b) students should be given choice in what they read; and c) teachers should give students class time to read choice books. The text goes on to explain how she sets up her classroom to successfully teach her kids.
Hosea is an often looked over book in the Bible. Hosea was a prophet who was asked by God to to marry a prostitute named Gomer. Seems crazy right? As you read the book further you see how Hosea is like God in his unconditional love and we are like Gomer who are sinners and wanderers. This is a 6 week Bible study I am doing with a group of ladies from my church. While away I read week 3: Loved Again and Week 4: Returning to Your First Love.
Also, I kept up to date on some of my favorite podcasts:
So, that leaves these three texts that I did not get to that I still want to read:
How is your summer reading going?
